Clint Eastwood has confirmed his latest film will be an adaptation of the book The '15:17 To Paris: The True Story Of A Terrorist, A Train, And Three American Heroes'.

The Hollywood star will direct the drama based on the 2015 thwarted terror attack by three American men who overpowered a terrorist armed with an AK-47 on a train from Brussels to Paris (via Deadline).

The childhood friends - two of which were off-duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces, were commended internationally for their bravery following the attack, in which they prevented a potential mass tragedy and protected 500 passengers on board.

Stone was said to have launched himself at the assailant first, and managed to put him in a chokehold despite the attacker cutting him repeatedly with a boxcutter, almost severing his thumb.

Sadler, Skarlatos, Stone and Jeffrey E. Stern wrote the book based on the harrowing incident, from which Eastwood's film will be adapted. Eastwood will also produce the project and begin casting so that production can begin later this year.

The director is also producing Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga's upcoming romantic musical A Star is Born.

Following the foiled terror attack, Skarlatos recalled the distressing events that unfolded to reporters (via The Guardian): "I just looked over at Spence and said, 'Let's go'."

Luckily the gun had jammed, but the men were unaware of that and continued regardless, with Stone adding: "He jumped up and ran, grabbed the guy by the neck. I got the handgun off him and threw it.

"We didn't know if the gun wasn't working or anything like that. Spencer just ran anyways and if anyone had gotten shot, it would have been Spencer and we're just very lucky that nobody got killed."
